- The Network Consultative Committee (NCC) is now launched! The call for applications is open until September the 13th, 2010.

CALL FOR APPLICATIONS
Deadline: September 13th, 2010

Network Consultative Committee (NCC)

You’re brimming full of energy and ideas? You feel you could do more for the Rights & Democracy Student Network?

This fall, we are launching a brand new initiative, the Network Consultative Committee. We are launching a call for applications to fill 6 volunteer positions.

The goal of the Committee is to respond to the Network delegations’ needs and to advise the Network. Its roles will be to:

  1. Support the work of the Network team with setting the overall direction of the Student Network and act as a resource for them;
  2. Foster and facilitate communication between delegations across Canada;
  3. Help strengthen the links between the Network and Rights & Democracy’s other programmes staff.

The NCC will be run on a democratic and egalitarian basis. It will be composed of a maximum of 8 students currently or previously involved in a significant way in one of the Network’s delegations. Those students will meet, most often electronically, to discuss current issues. They will offer recommendations as to the Network’s needs and the preferred solutions. Although the Committee’s role is consultative and not executive, its input will affect the Network’s evolution in a real and tangible way.

To ensure fair regional representation, three members from the Eastern region (Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland and PEI) and three from the Western Region (B.C., Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba) will sit on the NCC. There will also be two Network alumni, Network staff, and possibly Rights & Democracy staff who will sit on the NCC.

NCC meetings will be open to all and will be conducted in a way determined by its members, in respect of democratic principles.

The NCC is intended to be a flexible initiative that will in large part be the product of its members’ priorities, in collaboration with the Network Team. The NCC is the ideal platform to offer suggestions and ideas to contribute to strengthening the impact of the Network.

Projects
To give you a better idea of the issues addressed by the NCC, here is a list of projects it could contribute to:

  1. Assessment of the Network’s needs;
  2. Advice on national initiatives;
  3. Support to national campaigns, like the John Humphrey Award tour or the Panties for Peace Campaign (women’s rights in Burma);
  4. Creation of workshops and resources for intended use by Network delegations ;
  5. Creation of an alumni network;
  6. Elaboration of new campaigns.

Selection criteria for NCC members

  1. Significant involvement, current or past, in a delegation of the Rights & Democracy Student Network;
  2. Experience organizing  Rights & Democracy Delegation projects;
  3. Available time for virtual meetings and volunteer work;
  4. Strong interest in human rights and democracy issues in developing countries;
  5. Student leadership proven by volunteer involvement in other organizations;
  6. The ability to easily understand conversations and documents in both official languages of Canada will be considered a valuable asset.

Why join the NCC?
The NCC is a chance for the Network and university delegations in Canada to put in practice the principles of democratic development by involving members in the overall direction of the Network. It is also an opportunity for highly involved members to engage on another level beyond their campuses, and leave their mark by taking active part in shaping a new initiative. Furthermore, NCC members will be able to meet other Network members across the country, as well as other Rights & Democracy staff, and contribute to real, concrete solutions for the Network.
Selection of NCC members
The Rights & Democracy Student Network’s staff shall select the members of the NCC after reception of applications based on the criteria described above.

Members of the NCC shall sit for one (1) year, with a renewable mandate.

Candidacies
Interested individuals are asked to submit their candidacy as active or past members of a Student Network delegation. Past members can submit their candidacy no matter their occupation. Members can also submit someone else’s candidacy.
